Underachievement in Mathematics / Math remains a chronic problem in South African schools. There is a severe shortage of mathematics teachers, and a large number of students fail to graduate because of poor mathematics skills. FLKS was founded to solve this problem. We provide free maths lessons for underprivileged high school (grade 11 and 12) learners in the town of Knysna. Our operations are lean and focused, with 100% of funds spent directly on student lessons. FLKS started operating in 2006. We became officially registered as charity number 1031 in the Isle of Man in October 2008. Please see this PDF for registration details. From the UK Financial Times newspaper 24th January 2010: Pass rates for South Africa's final school exams have plummeted again this year...."Schooling in South Africa is a national disaster" says Graeme Bloch, education policy analyst....up to half of all students never sit the matriculation (school leaving) test....many students who do matriculate are not functionally literate or numerate....many private companies run their own schools to bring recruits up to standard....chronic shortages of teachers in maths and science....government is putting fresh emphasis on numeracy and literacy.... |
